Qualitative Math: Counting Stars
This is a wonderful activity that allows children to discover the order and beauty of the multiplication table–and it’s very simple! First, draw or have children draw a circle in a lighter color of crayon (orange, a darker shade of yellow). Then, show them how to write the sequence of numbers from zero to nine along the circumference of the circle, making sure to keep the numbers evenly spaced. Then, according to whatever “times table” you want to start with, have them “connect the numbers” according to the last digit in the number. For instance, if using the 6s, the sequence would proceed as follows: 6, 2, 8, 4, 0, then back to 6 (corresponding of course, to 6, 12, 18, 24, 36. Do this for the other tables, and the children will discover beautiful patterns. It makes math an aesthetic experience. How fun!
